چکیده

In this paper, an advanced boundary element method (BEM) with thin-body capabilities is applied to model multiple cells of ®ber-reinforced composites with the consideration of the interphases. E€ects of the multiple-cell models, as compared to the unit-cell model, in determining the e€ective material constants in the transverse plane, are studied. In this BEM approach, the interphases are modeled as thin elastic layers based on the elasticity theory, as opposed to spring-like models in the previous BEM and some models based on the ®nite element method (FEM). The BEM approach to the multiple-cell modeling is compared with the FEM approach. The advantages and disadvantages of the BEM as compared with the FEM for the analysis of ®ber-reinforced composites are discussed. It is shown that the developed BEM is very accurate and ecient in the modeling and analysis of ®ber-reinforced composites, and that di€erent cell models can have marked in¯uences on the evaluations of the e€ective modulus of ®ber-reinforced composites .

An advanced boundary element method (BEM) with thin-body capabilities was developed recently for the study of interphases in ®ber-reinforced composite materials (Y.J. Liu, N. Xu and J.F. Luo, Modeling of interphases in ®berreinforced composites under transverse loading using the boundary element method, ASME J. Appl. Mech. 67 (2000) 41±49). In this BEM approach, the interphases are modeled as t...

Modeling of Interphases in Fiber-Reinforced Composites Under Transverse Loading Using the Boundary Element Method

In this paper, interphases in unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites under transverse loading are modeled by an advanced boundary element method based on the elasticity theory. The interphases are regarded as elastic layers between the fiber and matrix, as opposed to the spring-like models in the boundary element method literature. Both cylinder and square unit cell models of the fiber-inte...

Boundary element applied to analyze circular-arc cracks at the interface of thin interphase layer between fiber and matrix

Interphases in unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites under transverse loading are modeled using an advanced boundary element method (BEM) based on the elasticity theory. The interphases are treated as elastic layers between the fiber and matrix, as opposed to the springlike models in the BEM literature. Stress intensity factors for interface cracks between the interphase and the matrix are...

Meso-scale Modeling of Tension Analysis of Pure and Intra-ply Hybrid Woven Composites Using Finite Element Method

One of the key issues associated with using of composites in various applications is their tensile behavior. The tensile behavior of a composite material is strongly influenced by the properties of its constituents and their distribution. This paper focuses on gaining some insights into the tensile process of pure and hybrid woven composite reinforced with brittle and ductile yarns. For this pu...

Finite element modeling of polymer matrix nano-composites reinforced by nano-cylindrical fillers

A new three-dimensional unit cell model has been developed for modeling three constituent phases including inclusion, interphase and matrix. The total elastic modulus of nano-composite is evaluated.  Numerical results are in good agreement with the previous proposed theoretical modeling. Higher matrix and inclusion elastic modulus both can dramatically influence the total elastic modulus.
